May 2021 – Carer of the Month

Siphiwe joined Elder last July and has provided 23 weeks of care. Nominated by Jane, her care recipient’s daughter, it was clear that Siphiwe has truly gone above and beyond keeping Jane’s mum active. This focus on movement has helped increase Jane’s mum’s mobility, and in a matter of just a few months, she is now almost walking on her own again.

“Siphiwe, or Sippy as we have come to call her, has been a breath of fresh air. We had a few carers before this, but Siphiwe has made so much difference to our lives that we now have her as mum’s main carer.”

From all of us from Elder HQ, congratulations.

“She is cheerful, knowledgeable and kind. From her experience as a carer and also working in hospitals, she has a vast bank of knowledge and skills. For example, first thing in the morning she gets mum to move her arms and legs before she gets out of bed to reduce falls. Her mobility has gone from about zero to almost walking on her own, and she is so much more confident.”

“Mum has severe dementia and of course is not going to improve fully, but Siphiwe is maintaining skills that Mum has for as long as possible. Nothing is too much for Siphiwe, and she has been extremely flexible around our needs and mum’s needs – we all love having her around.”

“Mum’s friend’s love Siphiwe too, she is a bit of a celebrity in our village and they queue up to take her on walks! Having Siphiwe reassures us 100% that we made the correct decision in removing her from respite and bringing her back to the home and the people she loves.”
