Frequently asked questions
I'm new to live-in care, how does it work?
Carers are required to live at the property with the care recipient and offer one to one support with daily activities. This often includes personal care, domestic tasks such as cooking and light housework, mobility support and companionship.
Live-in care enables older people to stay in the familiar surroundings of their own homes, and maintain their own daily routine – all while getting the dedicated, 24/7 support and supervision they need.
How does Elder work?
We've built an intuitive platform to help you find the care placements and easily communicate with families you match with. Our platform also makes it easier to manage your work and book breaks, and get the right support when you need it from our dedicated team.
Once you have access to the platform you can search for and browse a wide variety of placements, and set your own working preferences (e.g placements that are under 20 miles away, or placements where there are no pets)
There's no limit to how many job applications you can submit, and you'll always have the freedom to choose which placements you accept. We'll never assign you to a placement without your input.
What types of placements does Elder offer?
Currently, Elder offers two types of placements –
Short-term placements can last between 3 days and six weeks. On these placements, there will be an end and start date listed on the placement advert, and you’ll be expected to remain on the placement for the entire duration.
Long-term placements are ongoing placements. On these placements, the carer becomes the primary caregiver. You can schedule break periods during these placements by giving two weeks notice.
Does Elder take on carers of other nationalities?
Yes, if you're an experienced carer with clear, fluent English and have the relevant documentation to work in the UK, you’re free to apply to the Elder platform.
What experience do I need?
We ask that the self-employed carers have 6+ months of professional experience in adult or elderly care and must be happy to provide references.
Do I have to be self-employed to work as a carer with Elder?
All carers on the Elder platform are self-employed. This means that you are responsible for your own taxes and National Insurance contributions. For information on being self-employed and registering with the HMRC please click here.
Is the application process fully remote?
Yes, you can apply to become an independent carer on the Elder platform from wherever you are in England, Scotland, or Wales and our application process is fully remote.
