When a much loved, elderly member of your family reaches a stage in their life when they are in need of more care and supervision in order to stay safe, some tough decisions often need to be made. Where once, families would take on caring responsibilities themselves, this is not a practical idea in this day and age.
We start our own families later, help out with grandchildren because child care costs are exorbitant, stay in the workforce later and generally stay busy until much later in life than we ever did before. Taking on the added responsibility of providing full time care for an elderly relative becomes impossible, no matter how much we would like to. What, then, are the alternatives?
Your family member might have some care already, in the form of carers who drop by at set times of the day to assist with specific tasks, such as washing and dressing. They may even have meals delivered on a daily basis. But during the rest of their day, your family member may be alone and vulnerable.
When ‘drop in’ care is no longer sufficient, you might start to consider care homes or nursing facilities. These institutions are perfectly adequate in most instances, but they cannot provide a feeling of home for your relative, no matter how good their intentions.
Set meal times with no say in menu choices, set visiting hours and a series of doctors who have not built up a relationship with your relative all make for care without soul. There are some great people working in these homes, but their attention is divided amongst numerous care recipients, so they simply don’t have the time to spend with individuals.
Elder provide live-in care in Didcot and the surrounding areas
We will support you and your loved one, whether you’re looking for speciality care such as dementia care, elderly care or home care. Our carers are available throughout the UK and we can have a carer with you in as little as 24 hours.
What our customers say
“The security and patience of live-in care has meant my mother has relaxed and her general disposition has improved to no end.”
A better way
How much better would it be for your elderly relative to stay in their own home, receiving highly personalised care from a dedicated carer who stays with them 24 hours a day? It’s truly the next best thing to being able to provide that care yourself. It is perhaps better, even, than caring for your relative yourself, as the carers that work alongside Elder are specialists in their field, trained to the highest standards and they have no other demands on their time whilst they are with your relative.
24hr live-in care provides your family member with as much or as little help as they need for specific activities such as cooking, cleaning, washing and dressing, as well as making sure that medication is taken as necessary, shopping is ordered and a friendly ear for chat over a cuppa is always available. Because a live-in carer stays with your loved one in their own home, there is no upheaval and no having to decide which knick-knacks and treasured possessions can be kept to take to a room in a residential home.
Your family member’s routine can be as it always was, with meals taken when it suits them and visitors able to pop by at their leisure, and independence is gently encouraged for whichever activities are still able to be undertaken.
Carers working with Elder are industry professionals who like to be able to form proper relationships with their care recipients, so they have chosen not to work within a care home that forces them to divide their attention between many care recipients.
One to one carers stay for around 2 weeks at a time, on a rota system, so your family member will be cared for by two or three carers and will really get to know them. They won’t have to explain likes and dislikes over and over again as each new shift starts, as a comprehensive care package is drawn up in consultation with the people who know the care recipient best – you.
Elder pays excellent rates in order to attract and retain the very best in the care industry, so you know that your family member is being well looked after and is happy and settled in their own home, with their familiar routines and their own belongings.
Out and about in Didcot
Another benefit to live-in care is that your elderly relative will still be able to maintain their links with their local community. If they’ve always loved a Saturday afternoon trip to see Didcot Town play at home, then if they are still able to cope with it, their carer will accompany them.
If your mum has always been a member of the Didcot WI, then their carer will help maintain those links too. Your family member will be encouraged to stay as active as they are able, both physically and mentally, with appropriate trips and activities being included as part of their bespoke care plan.
They’ll still be able to stay on the books with their own GP, whether that’s over at the Oak Tree Health Centre or at Woodlands. Even outings further abroad to Oxford or High Wycombe are on the cards if your relative is willing and able.
Our care packages cost just £1095, which includes a highly personalised, one to one care plan that caters for your elderly relative’s every need, both physical and social.
Care plans are as unique as the people for whom they are designed, and we know that there are always questions that cannot be answered without talking to someone, so we have a team of friendly and professional customer support advisors ready to take your call. Lines are open seven days a week, between 8.00 am and 8.00 pm, so why not take that first step and speak to us?
