Who is live-in care and home care for?

If your loved one has reached the stage where they require long-term care, there are several options available. Nursing and residential homes have always been the first solution for those who are unable to care for their loved ones themselves. However, many older people would rather stay in their own homes in their later years.

In the last decade, private live-in care has become an increasingly popular option, as a long-term alternative to the care home. At Elder, our customers and care recipients are reaping the benefits of the stability and continuity of live-in care. Whether they are located north, south, east or west, the same quality of live-in care is available, meaning older people can stay in their own home and in their own community for longer.

Why is live-in care a better choice than a care home?

Change can be difficult for anyone, but especially for someone in later life. Being asked to leave their home, where they lived with a spouse or raised a family, to move into unfamiliar surroundings with strangers, doesn’t sound appealing to most.

In the perfect scenario, your parent or loved one would like to stay at home, and have a family member there, to make sure they are okay. Perhaps they just need help with daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning and going to the doctors or with more personal care, such as washing, dressing and using the bathroom. In many cases, our care recipients recognise they don’t need the facilities at the care home, simply the carer. When this is the case, live-in care is the perfect solution.

In a live-in care arrangement, your loved one receives personalised, one-to-one care from a trained individual they know and trust. When they need something, such as an extra blanket, a cup of tea or something to eat, there’s someone on-hand to help. All they have to do is ask. Unlike a care home, they don’t have to wait until a member of staff becomes available. Their carer knows them well, they know their preferences, their likes and dislikes. Because this is a one-to-one relationship, their live-in carer is always available for them.

Many of our care recipients are perfectly happy in their own homes and enjoy their daily routines. Perhaps they are still socially active, at church or in the community. Being in support networks has proven, long-term benefits for mental health.

Why is Elder the best care solution in West Lothian?

Elder carers are available nationwide, which provides live-in care to elderly care recipients who want to remain in their own home. Can my loved one stay in their own home in West Lothian?

West Lothian is a beautiful part of the world, with many accessible attractions. This makes it a great place to choose to stay in your own home. Sites such as the splendid ruin of Linlithgow Palace, beside Linlithgow Loch, are very popular with older visitors. This location was home to the Stewart kings and is full of history and even for wheelchair users, it is highly accessible. Outside, cobbles cover the courtyard, but these are well worn down. The lochside path is also perfect for a short stroll and is suitable for wheelchair users.

Nearby, Linlithgow Church is also not to be missed. With an interesting and long history, plus unusual architecture, the church is both spiritual and beautiful. For boat and canal enthusiasts, the Linlithgow Canal Centre offers a wide range of interesting things to see and do. The centre is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and their passion for the centre, and their drive for inclusivity, is apparent.

There are also plenty of NHS medical services in Livingston and around West Lothian. The Wood Medical Practice is located in Broxburn, and nearby, the West Calder Medical Centre is also very accessible. The three main pharmacies in Livingston are the Lindsay and Gilmour pharmacy in West Calder, the Omnicare pharmacy in Broxburn, and the Lloyds Pharmacy in Bathgate. When you arrange live-in care with Elder, our carers will help in picking up repeat prescriptions and ensuring punctuality to any appointments.

How does Elder live-in care work?

When you first contact Elder to provide live-in care for your loved one, we will book you in for a free care consultation with our care planning experts.

This provides a medium in which we create an ideal care plan for the care recipient. Once this is in place, we will begin to search for the best carer for the care recipient. We take into consideration challenges such as long-term illness, reduced mobility, and complex care needs and, of course, the carer’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Once we have a candidate, we will send across the carer’s profile, as well as an introductory video for approval.

We’ll then arrange for the live-in carer to come to your loved one’s home to begin providing live-in care. The first week then acts as a trial week. If, at the end of the week, you decide live-in care isn’t for you, there’s no commitment to continue. It’s our no-strings trial week.

Once in place, the carer will then help the care recipient with everything they need to live a normal and independent life, including completing light housework, personal care, and escorting them out for the day and to doctors’ appointments.

Colin and Dulcie’s story

Dulcie is 102-years-old and lives with her son Colin, his wife Mary, and her Carer Sarah. She has dementia and has had full-time live-in care for over two years. We talk to the family about the challenges of finding the right care solution for a fiercely independent woman – and how the positive benefits of live-in care with Sarah has transformed all of their lives.
