What is live-in care?
If you’re worried that your elderly relative seems to be struggling to cope in their own home, then you’re probably wondering what your next step should be. Should you look for a place in a care home? Is there an alternative option?
Live-in care is the perfect solution for any older person who needs some help and assistance with day-to-day tasks, but who is resistant to the idea of downsizing and moving into a care home. With live-in care, your loved one continues to enjoy the freedom of their own home, but with a carer providing help and support wherever it is needed.
Why is live-in care a better option than a care home in Penrith?
Whether your loved one lives in Penrith itself, or one of the outlying villages, such as Stainton, Edenhall or Melkinthorpe, they will be surrounded by friends and neighbours, living in comfortably familiar surroundings.
They are probably dreading the prospect of having to downsize and move into residential care. Staying in their own home means there’s no need to go through a lifetime’s worth of mementoes and possessions, trying to decide what to part with and what to keep.
Many of our care recipients have much-loved pets, which a care home would be unable to accommodate. Pet ownership is proved to reduce blood pressure and promote high levels of self-worth, and an Elder live-in carer will happily take on any pet care duties that your loved one needs help with.
Your loved one may also have a garden, which they have tended for many years. Elder live-in carers are prepared to help out with a variety of tasks around the home, including help with gardening, to ensure that your loved one can continue to enjoy their own patch for many years to come.
Who can benefit from live-in care in Penrith?
Elder provide live-in care for a wide range of conditions and circumstances, depending on the needs of your loved one. Some of our clients are concerned that their elderly relative is lonely, and in these cases, a live-in carer can provide companionship, in addition to helping out with household chores.
Some of our care recipients are recovering from an injury, illness or operation, and would struggle to cope alone in their homes. A live-in carer can help with a variety of tasks until your loved one is back on their feet again.
Other care recipients have more complex needs, particularly where long-term health conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are an issue. A live-in carer enables them to lead independent lives, making the most of every day, thanks to the help and support of their dedicated carer.
What does a live-in carer do?
An Elder live-in carer will perform a wide variety of tasks to ensure that your loved one is able to make the most of every day. From being on hand for a friendly chat and a cup of tea, to help with household chores, gardening duties and even pet care, the caregiver is ready to help your loved one at every turn.
The carer will ensure that your loved one attends medical appointments, whether at the Penrith Health Centre, Temple Sowerby Medical Practice or Kirkoswald Surgery. They will also pick up prescriptions from Joseph Cooper Pharmacy on King Street, for example, and will ensure that medications are taken promptly, as instructed by medical staff.
The carer will assist with any household tasks where your loved one needs support, help or assistance, and will be on hand throughout every day and night to deal with emergencies, should they occur. Simply having another adult in the home can be reassuring for an elderly person.
Days out are important, and the carer will make sure that your loved one receives adequate amounts of fresh air and exercise. This could involve a walk around Lowther Castle Gardens on a pleasant day, a trip to the New Squares shopping centre, or a delicious afternoon tea at Granny Dowbekins Tearooms.
Some care recipients, naturally, will have more complex needs. In these cases, the carer will provide additional support in the form of personal care, helping with bathing, dressing and toileting, to ensure that your loved one is able to live as full a life as possible.
How much does live-in care in Penrith cost?
Most of our Elder clients are astonished to discover how little our service actually costs, particularly when compared to the cost of a place in a care home, which is often at least 30% more expensive. Plus, you won’t pay more for more acute needs, such as Alzheimer’s care.
In fact, Elder live-in care costs just £849 per week. We charge a single flat rate, so there are no unexpected costs or hidden extras to pay, making it easy for you to budget for care on a long-term basis.
