What is live-in care?

Live-in care is the perfect solution for any elderly person who wishes to remain in their own home but is struggling to cope. Whether your loved one is lonely, and would like a companion, or is experiencing health problems, a live-in carer is able to provide assistance and support, enabling them to continue living in their familiar surroundings.

Why is live-in care a better alternative than a care home in Lancaster?

Whether your loved one lives in Lancaster itself, or one of the outlying villages, such as Halton, Stodday or Aldcliffe, the chances are that they have built up a network of friends and neighbours, along with a daily routine that suits them very well.

Moving into residential care disrupts this pattern, forcing your loved one to adjust to a new set of rules in a new place, and some elderly people find it difficult to adapt to these changing circumstances.

Care home staff have to look after many residents, making it challenging to create continuity of care. There are only so many staff members to go round, which means that your loved one may have to deal with several new faces in the course of each day. No matter how good the care home, the staff are unable to provide the 24-hour one to one care that a live-in carer provides.

Many of our clients feel that their loved ones would not be happy moving away from their much-loved homes and moving into a room in residential care. Such a move can be stressful, especially when your elderly relative has to go through all of their possessions as they attempt to downsize.

With a live-in carer, there is no need to part with anything - the carer moves into the home and assists your loved one with any tasks they are struggling with, from dusting to laundry.

The carer will ensure that your loved one gets plenty of fresh air and appropriate exercise, whether that’s a gentle stroll around Williamson Park or a shopping expedition to Marketgate. With no risk assessments to fill out, fun outings and social events can be decided upon, even at very short notice.

Who can benefit from live-in care in Lancaster?

Elder live-in carers encompass the full range of caring duties, from simple companion care through to personal care, including for those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Elderly people often feel vulnerable on their own, and merely having another adult presence in the home can be reassuring, particularly at night. The carer will help with a variety of household chores and will enable your loved one to get out and about.

What our customers say

“It is reassuring to know that my father is being cared for by someone who understands his needs and his dementia symptoms.”

Some care recipients just need help for a few weeks following surgery or illness. The carer can arrange and facilitate medical appointments at Meadowside or Queen Square Medical Practices and will order and collect prescriptions at Dalton Square Pharmacy or elsewhere, dispensing medications appropriately.

Some of our care recipients have more complex needs, and a live-in carer enables them to carry on enjoying life to the full while remaining in their familiar surroundings, with friends and neighbours close by.

What if my loved one doesn’t like their carer?

Having someone new moving into your home can be tricky at first, as both parties adapt to the change, but at Elder, we try to make the process as easy as possible. We take care to source a caregiver who matches as closely as possible with your loved one, whether in temperament, personality or shared hobbies and interests, as we find that this helps both parties to settle into the relationship quickly.

Most of our carers and care recipients go on to become firm friends, but now and again, through nobody’s fault, a care recipient fails to ‘gel’ with their assigned carer.

On the rare occasions when this happens, we move quickly to source an alternative caregiver as soon as possible, causing as little disruption to the care routine as possible. Live-in care is an enabling service which relies upon a good rapport between both parties in order to be successful, and we work hard to ensure that this is the case.

How much does live-in care in Lancaster cost?

Live-in care provides your loved one with one to one care and assistance around the clock, so you might expect it to cost a little more than a place in a care home. In fact, our clients are usually surprised to discover that the cost of an Elder live-in carer is around 30% cheaper than residential care, with an even more significant saving where the carer is looking after a couple in their own home.

We believe in being completely transparent about our costs, which is why we don’t put any hidden extras on your bill. We charge a single flat rate for live-in care of just £770 per week, which allows you to plan your budget without worrying about escalating costs.
