What is live-in care?

Live-in care is when a dedicated and empathetic caregiver moves into your elderly relative’s home, acting as an enabler, companion and facilitator.

The service is for any older person who is struggling to cope in their own home, and who is facing the prospect of having to move into a residential home. Plus, you won’t pay more for more acute needs, such as Alzheimer’s care.

What makes live-in care a better option than a care home in Cambridgeshire?

Many care homes offer an excellent service to elderly people, but there are a number of downsides to the service that they provide.

The major hurdle for many older people is that they must move into a new place, filled with people that they don’t know, and they must conform to new rules and regulations designed to promote the safety of all residents and caregivers. This is obviously essential but can be difficult for elderly people to adapt to, particularly when they are used to a lifetime of independence.

Moving from a family home into a room in a care home involves a great deal of downsizing, which can be extremely distressing for the older generation.

Your loved one must go through all their possessions, making heartbreaking decisions about what to keep and what to part with. Unless the care home happens to be very local, such a move will involve saying goodbye to friends and neighbours too.

Many older people have gardens that they have lovingly tended for many years, and they would loathe to part with them. Others have much-loved pets, which the majority of care homes simply cannot accept, despite the many known health benefits of pet ownership, such as reduced blood pressure. By remaining in their home, with a live-in carer, none of these things have to be given up.

With a live-in carer, your loved one can carry on enjoying their favourite things and their familiar routines, whether that’s a walk through Wandlebury Country Park on a pleasant afternoon, or a shopping trip to Cambridge’s Grand Arcade Shopping Centre.

With no forms to fill in or risk assessments to be completed, your loved one can be out and about with just a few minutes’ notice, thanks to the help of their carer.

Who can benefit from live-in care in Cambridgeshire?

Whether your loved one lives in Cambridge, St Neots or Ely, an Elder live-in carer will enable them to make the most of every day. Many of our care recipients are lonely and nervous of being alone in their homes, and in these cases, having a companion carer in the house provides valuable reassurance, as well as helping to dispel feelings of loneliness.

Some care recipients require a period of respite care, often following a period of illness or after an operation. The carer looks after them in their own home, gradually stepping back as their health improves until they are once again able to cope with day-to-day life.

A large number of Elder care recipients require long-term live-in care, with the carer taking on more duties as the health of the care recipient deteriorates. This enables them to carry on living in their own home, which can be incredibly empowering for them.

What does a live-in carer in Cambridgeshire do?

An Elder live-in carer will perform a wide range of tasks in order to facilitate your loved one. They can provide anything from simple companion care, through to the more complex tasks associated with chronic health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, which require more in-depth personal care tasks, such as help with bathing or dressing.

The carer will help out with household tasks such as cleaning, laundry and washing up. They will help with gardening and pet care duties, if required, and will perform any task that enables your loved one to continue to enjoy living in their own home.

The carer can arrange medical appointments and make sure that your loved one attends at the specified time, whether at their local GP surgery, the county hospital or Fulbourn Hospital.

They will collect and dispense medications in accordance with medical instructions and will ensure that your loved one receives adequate amounts of fresh air and exercise, along with a healthy and nutritious diet.

What is the cost of live-in care in Cambridgeshire?

With live-in care offering one-to-one care around the clock, many of our clients expect our fees to be comparable to those of a residential care home and are pleasantly surprised to discover that this is not the case.

In fact, at Elder, we charge a fixed fee of just £1225 per week, which represents a saving of around 30% on the cost of a place in a care home. Where the carer is looking after a couple, the savings are even more significant.

Just because we charge less than residential care, it doesn’t mean that we cut corners when paying our employees. We understand that our reputation rests on the quality of the work that our staff do, which is why we make sure that we pay them above the industry standard.
