Why should I consider live-in care for my loved one?

At some stage, many elderly people find that they’re less steady on their feet, or prone to lapses of memory, making it difficult for them to remain in their own homes in safety. If you feel that an elderly relative is approaching this stage in life, you’re probably considering your options for their long-term care.

A live-in carer does away with the need to move into alternative accommodation. The carer comes to live in your relative’s home, and offers help, support and assistance to enable them to continue living an independent life. Carers are selected to be as close a match as possible with their care recipients, ensuring common ground, whether that’s shared hobbies or a similarity in outlook on life.

Which is better - live in care in Chalk Farm, or a care home?

Some elderly people are happy to leave their familiar surroundings and move into residential care, but the majority of people much prefer to stay in their own homes. After a lifetime of independent living, your loved one will have a house filled with possessions they’ve gathered over a lifetime, with every piece of furniture and individual ornament telling its own unique story.

Having to go through these treasures in order to whittle them down to fit into a single room in a care home can be a painful task. Yet by moving a live-in carer into your loved one’s home, there is no need to part with much-loved possessions. Your loved one can carry on enjoying their usual routines, aided by the caregiver, who acts as an enabler and facilitator.

Whether your elderly relative lives in Chalk Farm, Camden, Primrose Hill or Kentish Town, they’re certain to have friendly neighbours living nearby. They’ll have their own preferred social events, whether that’s regular bridge meetings at the Ruff Club in Plender Street, or a game of bowls at North London Bowling Club. A live-in carer will help your loved one to get to their favourite club meetings and social events, helping them to enjoy all of their favourite outings.

The carer will happily assist with pet care duties, for elderly care recipients with pets. The majority of care homes don’t allow residents to bring their pets, due to health and safety regulations, but spending time with pets is known to offer profound health benefits. With live-in care, there’s no need for your elderly relative to make the difficult decision to rehome their beloved companion, and they can continue to enjoy spending time with their feathered and furry friends for many years to come.

What tasks does a live-in carer in Chalk Farm undertake?

When you decide to arrange live-in care for your elderly loved one with Elder, we spend time assessing the type of care that’s required, before drawing up a tailored care plan, which can be adapted over time, to take into account your relative’s changing needs. We can supply companion carers, for those who are in need of company to keep loneliness at bay, or carers who offer personal care services, such as help with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, for those with more complex needs.

The carer’s sole focus is ensuring your loved one’s safety and comfort, and they’ll perform a wide range of tasks to fulfill this role. From offering a friendly chat over a cup of tea, to helping out with household duties, such as cooking, cleaning, making beds and dealing with the laundry, no task is too big or too small for an Elder carer.

Perhaps your loved one has a garden that they struggle to cope with. The carer will happily undertake gardening duties, or assist your loved one as they potter in the garden on a sunny afternoon. All Elder carers understand the importance of appropriate exercise, fresh air and good nutrition, so you won’t have to lie awake wondering whether your loved one has remembered to eat, or has forgotten to turn the gas hob off at night.

The carer will accompany your relative to medical appointments at local community health centres, such as Adelaide Road Medical Centre or Primrose Hill Surgery, and will make sure that prescriptions are kept up to date, collecting them as needed from local pharmacies, such as Zafash 24-hour Pharmacy.

How much will live-in care cost in Chalk Farm?

The cost of Elder care is completely transparent, to avoid unpleasant shocks when budgeting for long-term care. We don’t add extra charges or surprise our clients with hidden costs. Elder care is charged at a flat rate of just £795 per week, which represents a saving of around 30% over the cost of a single place in residential care. The only time we’ll ask for additional fees is if there’s more than one person in need of care, or it is required of the carer to bring their own car.

Elder care may be cheaper than a care home, but that doesn’t mean that the caregivers who work with us lose out - in recognition of the work that they do, we always ensure that they earn above industry standard rates.
