Elder tips

While a carer’s profile can tell you a lot about them, to get a deeper understanding of who they are and their skills, it’s important to speak to them directly.

You can start a conversation using the chat feature in MyElder. Many families use this to arrange a phone or video call – whatever’s most comfortable and convenient for everyone.

During the first conversation

  • Be warm and welcoming
  • Be honest about your loved one’s care needs and the care environment, this will help the carer understand if they’re right for the job. It’s better for everyone to find out at this stage if it’s a good match.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be prepared to answer some yourself. This is an opportunity for both of you to understand more about each other

Here are some questions families often find helpful –

  • What kind of personalities do you get on best with?
  • What’s your favourite thing about providing care?
  • What relevant experience do you have for caring for my loved one?
  • How would you deal with a difficult situation?
  • How would you handle it if my loved one became confused or upset?
  • How do you form a good relationship with the person you’re caring for?
  • What kind of meals can you cook?
  • How do you protect a person’s dignity when it comes to personal care?
  • How do you communicate with the family?
  • What is your availability, do you have any holidays planned?
  • What are your hobbies, and how do you like to spend your time?
  • Is there anything you absolutely won’t do?
  • Is there anything you’d like to ask me?
