Your eligibility review

Before we introduce you to any carers, our Safety and Trust team reviews what your loved one needs. It’s how we check that carers introduced through Elder can support them. The review uses the answers you give in your care appraisal, so there’s nothing extra to fill in.

How the eligibility review works

When you’ve completed your care appraisal, our Safety and Trust team looks at your loved one’s needs. The team includes registered nurses. They check that your loved one’s needs are something carers introduced through Elder can support, and that live-in care is a suitable option for your family.

Elder is an introductory agency, so the review isn’t a risk assessment or a care plan. It’s a check on whether carers introduced through Elder can support what your loved one needs.

What the Safety and Trust team looks at

The team looks at what you tell us in your care appraisal, including:

  • Medication: what your loved one takes, including any controlled drugs, and whether they need more than a reminder to take it.
  • Mobility: how they get around, and any equipment such as a hoist.
  • Night-time support: whether they need help during the night, and how often.

Your care appraisal also asks about things like medical conditions and diet. These don’t form part of the eligibility review.

THE OUTCOMES

Three possible outcomes after the review

01

Approved

We’ll let you know, and your care search begins so carers can apply.

02

We need more information

A member of the team may call you to clarify an answer, for example about medication or the help your loved one needs at night. Nothing is decided until we’ve spoken.

03

Not a suitable fit

If carers introduced through Elder can’t support your loved one’s needs, we’ll tell you as early as we can and explain why. We’ll then talk through your options with you, such as a managed care provider.

What carers introduced through Elder can’t support

Carers introduced through Elder are experienced, but they aren’t nursing professionals. They can prompt your loved one to take their medication, but they don’t:

  • Carry out nurse-led tasks such as wound care, stoma care or PEG care

  • Give injections, finger-prick glucose checks, pessaries, enemas or suppositories

  • Give controlled drugs, or medication without the person’s knowledge

  • Support ventilation or oxygen equipment, such as BiPAP or CPAP

  • Go beyond basic catheter care, which is emptying a leg bag and attaching a night bag

  • Do anything that restricts your loved one’s freedom, such as preventing them from leaving their home

Not sure if your loved one’s needs fit?

A few other situations also need a closer look. If your loved one’s needs fall into one of those, our Care Advisor will talk it through with you.

Who does the eligibility review

The review is done by Elder’s Safety and Trust team, led by Bianca Wardle, Head of Safety and Trust.

Clinical lead nurses review care profiles and speak to families when the team needs more detail. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is part of the team too, and reviews any safeguarding concerns.
