Burnham Market sits on the north Norfolk coast and has kept its character thanks to the independent shops lining its High Street. Sweeping beaches, coves and nature reserves sit right on the doorstep too, ideal for those who enjoy a walk outdoors. If your parents receive live-in care in Norfolk or another care arrangement, a change of scene can do them good.
If you're planning to explore further afield, our guide to things to do with your elderly parents in Norfolk covers attractions across the wider county.
Here are five ideas for a day out near Burnham Market, plus practical tips on accessibility and planning ahead.
Five miles east of Burnham Market, Holkham Hall has been home to the Earls of Leicester since the 18th century. Its Marble Hall and State Rooms sit within a 25,000-acre estate, with a walled garden and café worth building time in for.
You can borrow two wheelchairs and two mobility scooters free of charge, and a stair-climbing machine carries manual wheelchair users to the first-floor state rooms. Carers go free too, and level access runs from the main entrance right through to the Hall, Café and Walled Garden. The Hall itself is only open on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays, late March to late October. The Walled Garden, Holkham Stories exhibition and Courtyard Café are open daily.
See Holkham's accessibility guide before you go, or call 01328 713111.
Around half an hour's drive from Burnham Market, Blickling Estate was once home to Anne Boleyn and is now run by the National Trust. Costumed characters bring Tudor life to the house, and the gardens include a secret garden, a temple and sweeping parkland walks.
You can borrow powered mobility scooters and manual wheelchairs, including two all-terrain models, from the Visitor Reception. The Essential Companion pass gives a carer free entry. Lift access to the upper floors is limited, and visitors using it must be able to evacuate via the stairs unaided in an emergency.
Call 01263 733956 to book equipment ahead, or see Blickling's accessibility guide before you go.
A scenic drive along the coast brings you to Felbrigg Hall. It’s a National Trust house with 15th-century stained glass in the Great Hall and a spectacular walled garden. Stewards are on hand throughout to talk through its history.
Powered wheelchairs are welcome inside, though narrow corridors mean four-wheeled mobility vehicles can't be accommodated in the house itself. You can borrow a Tramper and several PMVs (Powered Mobility Vehicle) for the grounds, though stock is limited. Call 01263 837444 to reserve one ahead of your visit.
See accessibility information for Felbrigg Hall before you go.
Titchwell Marsh sits on the coast between Burnham Market and Hunstanton, and is one of Norfolk's best spots for birdwatching. Reedbeds, lagoons and a sandy beach all sit within a short walk of the visitor centre.
The main trails are flat, hard-surfaced boardwalks and gravel, and both bird hides are level and wheelchair-accessible throughout. A mobility scooter is available to hire during opening hours, best booked in advance by calling 01485 210779.
See Titchwell Marsh's facilities guide before you go.
Heading east from Burnham Market towards Holt or Sheringham brings you to the Poppy Line, a heritage steam railway running along the coast. It's a calm, seated way to take in the scenery without a long walk.
All three stations have level access, and two refurbished coaches carry wheelchair users, though these need booking in advance. Accessible toilets are available at every station.
Call 01263 820800 to book a wheelchair space before you go.

When David's loved one faced a sudden hospital discharge, he had to act fast to avoid a care home she deeply feared. Live-in care meant she could return home safely, with support in place right away.
David said she's getting "the same level of care" as a care home, if not more, "with a 24/7 carer who's here."
A day trip doesn't have to wait until every mobility need is planned down to the last detail. Most of the venues above can flex around a parent's pace, so even a short visit still counts as a proper change of scene.
If your parents already have live-in care, think about whether their regular carer should come along or have the day off instead. A familiar carer knows the routine, which can make a longer day easier to manage. If you'd rather they rested, temporary respite care can cover things while they're away.
Burnham Market itself is a compact village, so most families base their day there and take a short drive out to whichever venue fits best. Holkham Hall and Titchwell Marsh both sit close to the coast, while Blickling Estate and Felbrigg Hall lie further inland.
