What is live-in care?

When your elderly relative reaches the stage in life where they are no longer able to manage alone and now need long-term care, you may be considering your options. The majority of older people do not want to leave their own home, and are very reluctant to consider moving into a care home. If your loved one is in this position, Elder can provide the live-in care service that you need.

Why is live-in care in Worthing a better solution than a care home?

Everyone wants to know their loved ones are safe and being well cared for. With live-in care, you know that not only is your relative benefiting from one-to-one care that meets all their needs, but they will also have the companionship of a dedicated carer who knows and understands them well.

They will have a level of care that would be impossible for a care home to provide, and your elderly relative will not have to face the trauma of moving away from the home they love, leaving friends and neighbours behind. With a live-in carer to support them, your loved one can continue enjoying hobbies and social activities in their local area.

A little-recognised fact is that elderly people are more likely to engage in physical activities when they are in familiar surroundings. Wherever practical, our carers will encourage your loved one to continue with hobbies that are known to have health benefits, such as gardening or walking.

Elder carers have the training and experience to provide all the care your loved one needs, whether that’s companion care or a more complex care solution, applicable for those who are living with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia. Being able to enjoy the highest quality of care in the comfort of their own home will give your elderly relative the best quality of life possible. It’s also proven to be a safer environment for care, with up to one third fewer falls.

How is live-in care organised?

Elder will draft an individual care plan for the care recipient, detailing their unique needs. Their live-in carer will carry out the tasks required to keep your loved one comfortable and safe whilst supporting them to carry on with the things they enjoy doing.

For example, your loved one may like planning and cooking their own meals and, if this is the case, the carer would instead concentrate on the tasks your loved one does not enjoy as much, such as cleaning or laundry. However, if your relative is unable to cook or does not enjoy meal preparation, then their live-in carer will ensure that regular nutritious meals are provided.

If assistance is needed with washing, dressing or any other aspect of personal care, the live-in carer will be able to provide this and will also ensure that any health care appointments are kept. If your loved one is a car owner, their carer could chauffeur them to see their GP, perhaps at the Broadwater Medical Centre, or to the foot clinic at All About Feet. If they do not have their own transport, then the carer could instead accompany your relative in a taxi.

Other duties a live-in carer might perform include looking after cats or dogs, ensuring they are fed regularly. This can be a real advantage as your loved one can continue to enjoy all the benefits of pet ownership, even if they are no longer able to provide all the practical care pets require.

Elder’s carers can also help with prescriptions and ensure that they are obtained from local services such as Paydens Pharmacy.

How can live-in care enhance my loved one’s life in Worthing?

If your loved one is fortunate enough to live in Worthing or one of the nearby villages such as Lancing, Ferring or Sompting then they are likely to enjoy getting out and experiencing all that this beautiful area has to offer. After discussions about what they are able to do and enjoy, our carers will accompany your loved one perhaps for a walk on the seafront or to one of Worthing’s many private art galleries.

Your loved one might like to visit the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, or perhaps they would prefer a trip to the less well-known English Martyrs Catholic Church in Goring-by-Sea where visitors can see the world’s only known reproduction of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling.

Because your loved one will be accompanied by their live-in carer they will be able to enjoy the area, visit friends and maintain their social networks.

Why choose live-in care from Elder?

At Elder, we always aim to provide the highest possible standards of live-in care for the elderly.

One of the most unique aspects of our service is the way we match carers to care recipients. Unlike many other providers, we go much further than just assessing practical needs. We believe great care is about putting people first. That’s why our care planning experts build up a detailed picture of your loved one’s character: their personality, hobbies and interests. We’ll use this information to match them to a carer we really feel they’re going to get along with. It means they often get more than just a carer, they get a true companion.

Our support team will be with you whenever you need advice, support or information and our fully managed service means that you do not have to worry about any of the red tape associated with recruiting and employing people.

If you would like to find out more about Elder’s live-in care service or would like to discuss your loved one’s situation with one of our care advisors, call us any day between 8am and 8pm.
