Why consider live-in care?
After an accident, illness or death in the family, many of us find ourselves faced with the question of how we can ensure that our parents or loved ones are safe and sound. Changes in health and situation are the main reasons for looking into care home facilities, but for many older people, staying at home could be a better solution.
It’s hard to over-emphasise how important familiarly is to older people, especially those living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Waking up in their own home and sticking to the same general daily routine as they have done for many years, helps many older people feel secure and comfortable.
One very important part of this routine is having continuous care from a familiar face. While it’s very nice when a family member can undertake this care, in our increasingly busy lives, this is often not possible. That’s why, at Elder, we’re dedicated to providing the best possible alternative - trained, one-to-one professional care from an experienced live-in carer.
What does a live-in carer in Renfrewshire do?
As the name suggests, a live-in carer is someone who lives in the care recipient’s home, while delivering elderly care. Carers don’t take the place of a doctor, but act as a family member would - cooking and cleaning, helping with dressing and washing, making sure medicines are remembered and, of course, keeping your loved one company. They’re trained carers who know what to do in an emergency and who simply offer a comforting presence on a day-to-day basis.
Most carers are accommodated in a spare bedroom or a converted room in the care recipient’s home. This way, the carer can look after your loved one in the daytime, and is on call in the evening and night time too. Because they live in, should something happen, help is just a call or a button press away.
Will the carer take my loved one out in Renfrewshire?
While some older people prefer to stay warm indoors, most enjoy getting out and about once in a while. Fresh air and social interactions help to keep older people sharper and healthier, and living in their own home can provide a secure base from where the care recipient can continue to get out and about. Whether this is a short walk to the local shops, a visit to friends and family or a trip further afield to a local attraction, our live-in carers are happy to support the care recipient’s health and wellbeing, by encouraging them to get out and about.
What’s more, Renfrewshire is a lovely place for older people to chose to continue living at home. With many fascinating churches, stately homes and attractions, as well as social clubs for elderly residents, there is always something to do.
Paisley Abbey is one such destination. This ancient abbey is a beautiful building, full of historical interest. Despite its age, it is very accessible. Many older residents here look forward to the Christmas Carol Service each year and the social events that the church hosts. Even for those who don’t want to worship here, the architecture of the building is truly wonderful.
For those who prefer a modern environment, the Intu shopping centre in Braehead is the place to go. This multi-level indoor shopping centre is serviced by wheelchair accessible lifts and it has disabled toilets too. In summertime, the Castle Semple Country Park is a great park with plenty of walking trails and a number of historic buildings. With easily accessible disabled parking, this is the ideal place to head for an afternoon out, watching the swans and feeding the ducks.
Age Scotland also runs a number of services for older people in Renfrewshire. The ROAR Club offers a weekly meet up, including a two-course meal and board games or singing. There is also a health and wellbeing programme, which includes a weekly gentle exercise session, therapies and other social activities. The main doctor’s surgeries in the area include the Braehead Medical Centre and the Renfrew Health Centre.
