What is live-in care?

If you are lying awake at night worrying about whether your loved one is safe and secure in their own home, then the chances are that you are considering their long-term care needs. A great alternative to residential care homes is the option to move a carer into your elderly relative’s own home.

The carer becomes a little like another member of the family, whose role is to ensure the safety and comfort of your loved one at all times. Because the carer moves in with your loved one, they are on hand throughout each day and overnight, helping out wherever needed, and ready to deal with any problems or emergencies.

What is it that makes live-in care a better option than residential care in Angus?

Wherever your elderly relative lives in Angus, whether on the coast at Montrose or Arbroath, or further inland at Brechin or Kirriemuir, they will have built up a network of neighbours and friends amongst their local community. Moving into a care home would mean moving away from familiar faces and places, which can be challenging to adjust to for people in their later years.

When you move a carer into your elderly relative’s home, there is no need to become accustomed to a new place, or new ways of doing things. Your loved one can continue to enjoy their current lifestyle, helped by their carer.

If your loved one has a pet, whether it be a cat, dog or a bird, they will almost certainly be distraught to learn that, in the majority of cases, they would not be able to take it with them if they moved into residential care. Having to part with a much-loved pet can be incredibly traumatic, but when a carer moves into the home, there’s no need to consider such drastic measures.

The carer will happily assist with any pet care duties that your relative struggles with, helping with feeding, cleaning and exercising the animal, as well as arranging any necessary trips to the vet.

Care homes have regular social events and outings, but these have to be arranged at times convenient for the staff, rather than residents. With a live-in carer, there are no form-filling or risk assessments if your loved one would like to get out and about.

At a moment’s notice, your loved one could be heading to Arbroath harbour to pick up fresh fish for supper, or paying a visit to House of Dun for a stroll around the grounds, before stopping off for afternoon tea. The carer will ensure that your relative can enjoy all of their favourite things, and will make arrangements to ensure that they are living life to the full.

What our customers say

What tasks does a live-in carer in Angus perform?

Live-in carers can fulfil numerous roles around the home to enable your loved one to carry on living there long term. All aspects of elderly care can be catered for, providing everything from companion care for those who are lonely, through to dementia care, where your loved one may need help with personal hygiene, bathing and getting dressed.

Elder carers will perform all sorts of household duties, from washing up and doing the laundry to making beds and doing the grocery shopping. The carer’s sole aim is to make life easier and more manageable for your loved one, and they will do whatever is necessary to ensure that they fulfil that role.

A live-in carer will accompany your loved one to medical appointments, whether that’s at Coupar Angus Medical Centre, Stracathro Hospital or one of the many GP surgeries in the area. They will keep prescriptions up to date, and organise visits by health professionals where necessary.

With a live-in carer looking after your relative’s needs, the whole family will be able to sleep soundly, knowing that your loved one is being looked after, and is safe and comfortable at all times.

How much will it cost for live-in care in Angus?

In view of the 24/7 aspect of live-in care, many Elder clients anticipate that the cost will be similar to, or greater than, the cost of residential care.

Imagine their surprise when they discover that the true cost of Elder live-in care comes in at around 30% less than the price of a place in a care home. The savings increase where a caregiver looks after a couple in their own home.

In fact, Elder care is charged at one single flat rate of just £795 a week, and with no hidden extras to push the costs up, it’s easy to work out a long-term budget for your loved one’s continuing care needs.

Our care service may be less expensive than you were expecting, but that doesn’t come at the expense of our carers. We pay above the industry standard rates for care work, as we believe in pay that reflects the excellent work that they do.
